Q - What Wheatens do you have available for rescue now?
Generally we do not have a Wheaten just waiting to be adopted. On average we place about 8-10 dogs a year.
Q - What are the Wheatens like that you generally have for adoption from rescue?
Generally, the Wheatens are 3 to 7 years old and were purchased from a pet store, a backyard breeder or a puppy mill. They are generally relinquished due to:
- A change in family situation (e.g., divorce, move, children or grandchildren arrivals, etc.)
- Behavior problems that have developed for a variety of reasons and the family has decided they no longer want to deal with the issues.
Q - Wheatens cost too much from a reputable breeder; can I get one cheaper through rescue?
Our adoption fees are generally less than the price of a puppy from a breeder. However, it has only been a handful of times in the past 20 years that we have gotten a puppy to place.
Q - How much does it cost to adopt a rescue Wheaten?
For dogs less than 6 years old we ask for a $300.00 donation. For dogs older than 6 years old we ask for a $200.00 donation.
Q - How well do Wheatens adjust to their new homes?
There can be a period of adjustment but most transition fairly easily to the new home. We advise most adopters to take a basic obedience class with their new wheaten. It is a good way to make sure you understand what the dog is trying to communicate to you and visa versa.
Q - Do your rescue dogs come with AKC registration papers?
Sometimes we get papers on relinquished Wheatens and gladly pass them along to adopters.
Q - Is there a guarantee?
No, there is no guarantee with a rescue dog. We collect whatever information we can on the dog when it is surrendered. What ever information we have, we pass along to the adopters so that they can make an informed decision.
Q - Do you ever place Wheaten mixes?
The GDSCWTC only places pure bred Wheatens. However, we do keep a list of potential homes that would also consider a Wheaten mix and if we hear about a mix, we notify those people of the Wheaten mix location. The adoption is directly from the current owner or shelter; not through our rescue organization. Please indicate if you would be interested in a Wheaten mix on the application.
Q - How long is your waiting list?
Generally we have about 10 to 20 applications on hand at any one time. However, the dogs are not placed on a first-come, first-served basis but as a best match to an adoptive home that will be the best place for the Wheaten.
Q - I want to get on your adopter list. What do I need to do?
Complete an application that is available online on this website. If you do not want to complete the application online, then print it out and mail it to the address on the application.
Q - Once I complete an application and submit it to you, what is the next step?
If we receive a Wheaten that matches the criteria of what you are looking for in a Wheaten, then we will contact you. Otherwise, your application will remain in our active application for 6 months. After 6 months of your submission of an application, we still keep your information on hand but we will be less likely to contact you with a potential adoption. If 6 months passes from the time you submitted your adoption application and you are still interested in adopting a wheaten rescue, please contact us (via email of phone) and notify us that you are still interested in a Wheaten rescue.
Q - What steps do you take to assure that the Wheaten is healthy?
All of our rescue dogs are checked out by a Veterinarian familiar with Wheatens and the inherited diseases we have in the breed. We do a complete physical exam and blood tests. We also make sure the dog is current on all of the standard canine vaccinations.
Q - Do I have to pay for the dog to be spayed or neutered?
No, if spaying or neutering is necessary, the club covers the expense to do so.
